NFHS RULING *Assuming batter interferes with the catcher's attempt to play on a runner NFHS 7-3-5c NFHS 7-3-5 (PENALTY) ..."When an attempt to put out a runner at any other base [NOT HOME PLATE] is unsuccessful, the batter is out and all runners return to the base occupied at the time of the pitch"... Note: The number of outs matter and the penalty may be different ONLY when a runner is ADVANCING to home plate.

NFHS 2-9-1 ..."It is considered a catch if a fielder catches a fair or foul ball and then steps or falls into a bench, dugout, stand, bleacher or OVER any boundary or barrier, such as a FENCE, rope, chalk line, or a pregame determined imaginary boundary line from the field of play. Here is the rule. The batter was incorrectly awarded a home run.

I think it was a superb call. Could have explained briefly to the coach, "There is no such thing as catcher interference". =) ...can of worms (opened)

Just to play devil's advocate.... Though we may disagree with the "spirit" of the rule and its application, in respect to NFHS Baseball Rules, this is clearly defined as OBSTRUCTION and requires a minimum award of one base to the obstructed runner beyond his position on base when the obstruction occurred. Within NFHS rules, it does not matter whether the runner was returning to a base or advancing when the OBSTRUCTION infraction occurs. That's the black and white. The Gray.... I wasn't there and every umpire and his/her judgement is unique. If you are a fan of "advantage baseball".... good call. No one gained from the situation.
