I have three children, and I worry sometimes that they do not have the proper appreciation for what a wonderful country they live in, and the sacrifices of so many that have made it possible.

I have taken to using the national holidays as occasions for teaching them. A few years ago, I was having a discussion with my (at the time) 6th grade daughter about why we observed Memorial Day. I was pleased that she knew. I asked her to write a poem.

As a small token of gratitude and respect for all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of their country and countrymen, as well as those who have also sacrificed much in service of their country (and continue to do so), I thought I would share what she wrote with all of you.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is coming

So go put up your flag

To show you love your country

And all those from it who have

Died for you, died for me

Died so that we can be free

Made this world a better place

And though they can’t see the look on our face

A look of Gratitude, a look of hope

A look that tells them we’ll try to cope

With not having them near

Or even having them here

Because they didn't survive

On earth, alive

But only in our hearts and minds

And don’t forget...

Memorial Day is coming

So go put up your flag

I think I'll go out and put up my flag - I wouldn't want to forget.
