Hey guys. I will soon be having a lot of free time and would like to start umpiring games. Mostly LL, Pony, maybe high school eventually. Just want to get some advice for what schools to go to, what to look for, or any other general knowledge to get me started. I know experienced members can be the best source if good info so I wanted to go straight to the source. I live in Orange County CA and have not attended any clinics or schools yet. can any one reccomend one?

Thanks in advance

Welcome!

I'm from Florida so I can't help you much. We have several members from SoCal on here I am sure they will chime in.

Locally I don't know but WR has schools a couple of times a year which I believe is in San Bernadino. They do a nice job with cages and field work. They also cover the rules pretty well. They base all their information and techniques on the Evans school.

Where in SoCal are you located?

Send me a PM and see what I can do to assist.

I am in Riverside.

As stated above he's in the OC. Which means if you want to get into HS you would need to contact rich jolly. Here is their website http://www.ocboa.com. Also if you want to get into LL go to a local field and ask the director for the UIC of the district. As for travel ball and Legion over the summer that's pretty much all ran through Gary Gilman down there. If you'd like his info please PM me and I'll ask Gary if he's willing to give it out.

As for which schools/camps to go to. Black and Blue camp is in Sacramento in Sept. You just missed the Wendelstedt palm springs. There will be another next year I'm sure. Also if your thinking of Pro School there in Florida Evans, PBUC, Wendelstedt. Finally there are several Summer camps out in AZ if you don't mind traveling.

Hope this helps you in your quest.

You can also look up IBOA. they are in Huntington Beach, Ca . Dick Jolly is a part of that group. They put on a weekend camp around Thanksgiving every year free of charge. MLB also puts on a camp in Compton at the MLB sports complex next to Compton JC
