When does a coach have to vacate the box?

U14 House league- R2 stealing 3rd, F2 throw is wide left and is headed towards the coach's box, F5 goes after the ball and the BC is attempting to get out of the way but gets in the way- not intentional. R2 advances home and scores standing up. R2 was going to get 3rd but should I have stop the runner there or allowed the play to go on/ no call? Ball ends up in foul ground on the grass.

How does he interfere? Is the throw catchable?

7.11 says he has to vacate any space needed by the defense. Otherwise, interference is called and the runner is out. Intent is not required.

I have a hard time believing he interfered with a throw at him. HTBT but I can't imagine F5 having a play on the ball if it is that bad.

Since the coach was trying to get out of the way, it is not interference.

J/R has this exact example and it says that since the base coach was trying to avoid interference to call nothing.

I thought no call but I was asked by the DC and said since there was no intent to impede on a poorly thrown ball...

I'd have to agree - and you answered it well, given that you judged the quality of the throw to be poor; the base coach has to give way, of course, but he can't be expected to become invisible.

Good call and good explanation. Remember, on a batted ball, he has to get out of the way. On a thrown ball, he can't interfere intentionally.
