love to ump Posted May 30, 2025 Report Posted May 30, 2025 Men's Rec. League I am in the C position, or P3...take you pick!...Line drive at pitcher is deflected, nails me on the instep. Time gets called, (or they mistook my cursing for time!)...Plate umpire say he thinks time should not have be called, says I am part of the field. Different umpire for second game, says YES, time should be called, pitcher is different than others infielders. Who right?....my bet is #2 Quote

PU, in this case, is correct (hope you’re alright 🫣😬), but he used a colloquialism instead of using Rulebook terminology. There’s a rule for this, explaining what the umpire is in a play like this. We’re a participant; we’re not “part of the field”. We don’t wear green or brown shirts (fading non-inclusive). 8 minutes ago, SeeingEyeDog said: If a batted ball touches the pitcher before it touches an umpire that is a live ball. It is, and you are correct; however, since we’re on the subject, let’s expand this – if a batted ball deflects off the pitcher first, without touching the ground, it is indeed still live (as we know). It can still be caught, though, by any other fielder and deemed as a Catch (Caught Batted Ball). However, if it next touches an Umpire or a Runner (unintentionally), it remains Live, but no longer can be a Catchable ball. Ball remains Live and in play. On the other hand, if a Batted Ball hits the ground and then contacts the pitcher – or hits the pitcher, then the ground – and then hits an Umpire or Runner (again, unintentionally) it remains a ground ball Live and in play. If the Batted Ball goes untouched by the pitcher as it passes by him, whether direct thru the air or as a grounder, is where we factor this statement: 36 minutes ago, love to ump said: time should be called, pitcher is different than others infielders. If pitcher doesn’t touch it (assuming it passed by him) then if the batted ball next touches: - an Umpire (inside of the infielders), Time is called. BR is placed (or awarded) 1B, all Runners forced to advanced are advanced one base, and all unforced Runners remain on base at TOP. - a Runner (again, inside of or in proximity to a fielder who could make a play on the ball otherwise), Time is called. The Runner is called Out, BR is awarded 1B, any forced Runners (other than the one called Out) are advanced one base, and any other unforced Runners return to base at TOP. 1 1 Quote
