The Man in Blue Posted May 4 Report Posted May 4 Just spit-balling from a hotel room . . . Weather today is a high of 50 with constant light rain/drizzle all day, winds at a steady 12-15 mph. Temp at first pitch this morning was 45. Current temp is 48 with a "feels like" of 39 (though I imagine it is worse than that ) with 23 mph gusts. E-mail from the org said, "We have turf. If teams want to leave, they can." In other words, we aren't calling anything because that means we have to refund money. Rather glad I didn't end up with games today. In the hotel getting ready to grade papers. Came down to the lobby in an elevator full of soccer players who smelled like miserable wet dogs. At what point should we stop bowing to the dollars and call off games? Quote

If we called games for that weather, we'd never have a college season. Calling games (for us) is foremost a safety issue. If there is a safety issue, then it is time to call it. The other issue is playability...does the game being played become functionally impossible to play? There is an argument to be had that there is a comfort factor, too, but that is likely age-dependent. 2 Quote
Richvee Posted May 5 Report Posted May 5 I was thinking the same thing. Welcome to northeast college baseball. 2 Quote

I wasn't intending that for a college level question, but good point. For all practical purposes, college is a level of "pro" ball (in as much that it is a job for the student-athlete). Simply calling it and looking for another day isn't always practical. Drawing a paying crowd and keeping the player coming back to the game isn't the purpose. I was leaning more towards youth ball with this line of questioning. I was focused more on levels where the game should be fun and enjoyable for the family to watch (namely, tournament ball). Quote
