Question

Scenario:  runner on third, two outs. Batter pops up foul near the dugout. Fielder catches ball for third out but falls into the dugout out of play.  Is the base runner still awarded one base scoring a run or does this rule only apply when there are less than two outs?

Fielder catches ball for third out...

Let’s use logic!!!...

... because it seems logic escapes us (as a people) sometimes...

On any other fly ball or pop-up, whether in fair ball territory or foul ball territory, is a catch a catch, is a catch, is a catch? And, if it’s a catch for the third out, do any runs score?

No.

So why is this proposed one any different?

In the situation presented, the only things that may result in a different outcome are:

  1. If the fielder was actually in the dugout or other dead-ball territory (established at Plate Meeting) prior to catching the pop-up. If he was, then that was, and should be ruled, a Foul ball. Thus, no advancement or award to any baserunners anyway.
  2. If Catcher’s Interference (CI) was called. The catch is nullified (if this was to be the third out), and the Batter awarded First Base. Any other runners are only advanced if Forced.
