Back in the saddle

Recommended Posts

Good morning, just got back in the saddle.  Going to try high school ball and the rec leagues. Was an umpire roughly 10 years ago for t-ball and coach pitch and I cant wait to get back at it.  Hope to meet and speak to other members around and learn the tips and tricks that you have

Welcome!

A few thoughts:

1) get as much in-person training as you can.

2) HS ball is really "civilized".  But reinforce your thick skin for rec/club/select ball. Expect chirping and "commentary" from coaches and fans on anything that is close, and even on stuff that is completely obvious. Fans especially have no idea about the rules.  Coaches know the rules pretty well, but also have hindsight working for them - and they will tend to try to drill you on that one call that you didn't get in real time.

3) work with partners until you feel really confident.  No scratch that - just always work with partners.

4) find a mentor who is experienced and also willing to share insights and provide constructive criticism.

5) work as many games as you can - baseball is a game of reps, and umpiring is no different.

6) have fun!
