Correcting a base-running error

This came up in a recent discussion within our HS umpire group. 

NFHS rules.  R3, one out.  B5 hits fly to F9.  R3 leaves early, before the ball is caught by F9.  He crosses (touches) the plate and then realizes he didn't tag up properly.  R3 goes directly back to 3rd base and touches it before the defense can execute a live-ball appeal.  Questions: a) Can a runner correct a baserunning error after scoring (now considered a retired runner, by rule)? b) Would an appeal be upheld at 3rd?  c) Would an appeal be upheld at home?  d) If the appeal is denied, does R3 need to stay at 3rd? or has he scored and corrected the tag-up?

I was very surprised at the correct interpretation of this play  I'll post it later.

A. Yes unless he left the playing field. 

B. The appeal of missing HP could be done by tagging R3 at 3B and making that appeal clear. 

C. Yes

D. If appeal is denied because he wasn’t seen leaving early than he can’t unscore his run but is still liable for the HP miss. Oops, He didn't miss it when he scored.

I agree with all this. We're both assuming that "R3 goes directly back to 3rd base" means that he did not retouch HP as he returned to 3B, making him liable to be called out on appeal at HP.

For (d), "If the appeal is denied, does R3 need to stay at 3rd? or has he scored and corrected the tag-up?" I'm not sure which appeal you mean: the appeal of 3B SHOULD be denied, as R3 is currently standing on 3B. The retouch appeal of HP should be granted, but I suppose it's possible that the umpire did not see R3 fail to retouch HP as he returned to 3B. There is no penalty for R3 returning to 3B in this situation.

If the appeal of HP is (erroneously) denied, then R3 cannot legally return to 3B: he should be removed from base, and his run scored.

If R3 is standing on 3B, then the defense can also employ a dead-ball appeal in FED.

I agree with @maven regarding (d). Poor rtfq on my part.
