I talked to him extensively between his last hospital stay and his death...my then-girlfriend was in the cardiac rhythm-management field, and we tried to convince him that he needed to have a device implanted. He didn't want one because of his work and the fact it would end his career because the electromagnetic fields he was around would be incompatible with one.

I really, really wish that he had listened.
