In a word:  Kevlar!  It stops bullets.  To my knowledge here is no Kevlar in the shoulder caps.  Plus, I think the plastic gives the shoulders a bit of stability so they stay where they should as the shoulders move around a bit under the shirt and could get displaced.  If you've ever gotten your shirt stuck over a misplaced/misrouted shoulder pad before you know what I am talking about.  Since we raise our arms, throw baseballs, point, etc.  Plus the need to look somewhat conventional would be my guess.

For the shins: other than the need to look conventional and maintain the proper shape without too much strappage to hold them in place.   That's all I've got.  I do think the shins are beyond comparison to anything else out there in terms of fit, comfort and protection.

If the stuff looked too radical not as many would buy it or try it.  But then again there are "those guys" who want to look different.  I am sure that if some provider sold a Stormtrooper suit like Star Wars as umpire gear, someone would think it was cool, buy it and wear it.

My .02...... again.

I understand all of the above perfectly.  Thanks for lending your .02! :)

As far as the Kevlar comment.

Kevlar stops bullets from going through the vest and piecing the skin/going into-through the skin.  People are severly bruised w/ wearing a bullet proof vest.  Mind you, ... it's apples and oranges, but .... its' the blunt force that's the issue w/ our tickers, isn't?

Caveat: I know people have tested this, and they claim 'no issues' when hit wearing this thing, and that's great.   I'm just saying, ... for me, I don't get it

I guess because a baseball is bigger in contact area (spreads out the force) and velocity is at least a couple hundred miles per hour less than a bullet, the force of impact isn't as damaging.

As you noted, it does not hurt, t all, In the slightest ,when you get hit with a baseball in the padding.

In my opinion, UE's new face mask looks very radical. Now, does this unique design translate into more protection? I'm not sure until I hear/see more evidence.

Thanks I needed that laugh

HS DH last weekend.  I'm BU for the JV game and PU for the frosh game.

1.  R1 & R2, no outs.  I'm PU.  Batter hits a high pop up into the infield between the mound and the 1B line.  My partner and I both call "IFF, batter's out!"  Ball hits off F3's glove and drops to the ground.  I reinforce the call, "Batter's out!  He's still out!" as loud as I can.  My partner does the same.  Runner's are still confused and take off running.  Defense throws to F5 for an easy tag on R2.  R1 has reached second base, but decides to run back to first.  Nobody is covering first (why would they?) and F4, who now has the ball) chases R1 back to first base, but can't get the tag on him.  After the play, I hear him say, "I forgot to tag up at first."

My son was pitching in a game this spring.  R1 R2.  One out.  Fly ball over the first baseman's head.  PU calls IFF.  Ball falls to the ground untouched in shallow left right field.  DHC tells the first baseman to step on first and appeal that R1 left early.  I bury my head in my hands and bite my tongue.  BU grants the appeal for the third out.
