Does anyone else help out at the park when not umpiring?

I was just wondering if anyone helps out at the parks when you are not in blue?

I am the asst UIC for the SLWS that we host each year. I don't get on the field to do games, but I do keep busy. Other than my UIC duties, I help out the grounds crew (for rain issues, tarp etc), I replace the bulbs in the light poles if they need it. Being a paramedic in real life, I am also thrown into trainer/injury stuff (that keeps me busy).

So my many hours at the stadium for a week, I stay real busy and sleep good at night.

 

Baseball is my favorite game, and being involved in other ways, gets me to the fields, and gives me something to do.

I am a board member for our Babe Ruth league (ages 13-18) and maintain the website.

I will be back in the LL coaching (T-Ball) ranks again with my youngest in the Spring.

I was an assistant hitting coach/bullpen catcher for my brothers 10U team during my first year as an umpire(i didnt get alot of games that year so i had time)

You do run the risk of losing your " authority figure†persona when you are doing Non umpire tasks and 20 min later trying to establish control in a ball game.

sounds like a recipe for disaster, i only do "non umpire tasks" on days i have no games, can't let them see you as "one of the guys" then try to be in charge

I don't think you need to worry about losing your authority.

In addition to being UIC, I send out all communication from the LL (Constant Contact), and I am the only person usually available to be any sort of grounds crew...  

 

I'm also the assistant coach for rules come district time. Most managers have no clue how to manage a district team as far as rules go, so I am tasked with helping them. It also turns me into the errand boy because I go to many district games, but I am not an official coach inside the dugout. In one Juniors district game, I had to make three separate runs to Rite Aid and Speedway for 1) beef jerky chew, 2) a 1 liter water, and 3) shoelaces to fix a left handers glove that decided to rip open in warm ups.

I don't wear anything that says umpire on it EXCEPT when I am doing a game.

Do you wear a disguise when you do the non-umpire tasks?

I coach my son's team (9 & 10 year old Dizzy Dean league) as well as umpiring.  This year I coached the All-Stars as well.  I don't umpire for the league in which we play.  After working my real job, coaching my son's team, watching my 7 year old daughter play softball, and calling my own schedule of games I don't seem to have any more time to spend at the ball park.

I don't wear a disguise - I wear shorts and comfy shoes. I am one of the UIC's for the local district, so the kids and coaches all know me anyhow. But the teams from away can't find me - I generally move a lot and keep a low profile, until I am called into action LOL.

Never had any cred problems.

Doing the other stuff gives me a different aspect to the game, and I think makes me a better umpire to understand how the field is built, how long we can play in the rain etc.

 

I only do this 'extra stuff' in summer ball. Never in HS, Legion or College - all business then.

Mixing roles generally comes back on you at sometime BUT if you are needed help out.
