1st time this has happened in a game I am umpiring. 2 out Noone on. 1-2 count, pitch comes in, batter swings and foul tips ball right into the catchers glove. As the catcher makes the catch, the batters backswing hits the glove and knocks the ball out of the catchers glove. I know what I called. What would you call?

Batter's out. Runners return to TOP base. In FED, if you've got a runner stealing on the pitch, we have BI and runner is out if you think F2 had a chance to throw out the runner without the BI.

There are no runners on base so can backswing INT still be a viable option?

The OP does say 'as the catcher makes the catch,' so it sounds like it is a foul tip and the batter would be out for strike 3. HTBT?

Strike 3 if still caught. Batter INT if uncaught and you judge F2 COULD have (not would have. INT takes away possibilities. There are no definites) caught it. If the backswing makes F2 not catch it, come out killing it and pointing at it. If he catches it, ignore the INT.

That is what I did. And my partner, who is an ex Minor League Umpire, told me I nailed it. And then he said, in his 30+ years of umpiring he doesn't think he has ever had that play.
