Pledge on hats and equipment?

I been out over ten years. I remember old timers spraying pledge on their hats to and wiping them off. Anybody still do this?

Pledge? For dusting wood? Why did they do that? I've been doing this ten years and in Internet forums the whole time. Never heard of pledge used on hats.

Some of us use Febreeze. Some spray with plain water. I wash them in washer and air dry them then touch up with Steam iron if needed. Others wash on top rack of dishwasher in a cap shape keeper.

Please explain the pledge thing.

Pledge on a dusty plate hat cleans up nicely from what I remember.  Spray it on and wipe it off.  These are old school dudes most arent alive anymore.

For more serious cleaning, I'm with @Majordave and wash it like you would clothes (cold water only).
