Braces

Watching the Detroit-Boston game and they mic'd Scott Barry when he was talking to a manager and I noticed he's got a slew of metal in his mouth. Don't think he's wearing a mouthguard and speaking from experience, a pop to the mouth with braces and nothing over them hurts like flying hell. Thoughts?

A zillion or two players have survived braces just fine.

Players don't wear masks (other than the catcher) and they wear braces. Think that might hurt even more?

 

And why would a hit to the mask tear up a face?

I don't think that's how a properly fitted and worn mask works.

 

I'm sure if it was an issue he's wear a mouth guard over it.

It's just weird. I would have thought he'd wear a mouthguard anyway. I was told to and it still caused some bleeding when I got hit using an HSM.

I've been hit in the mask countless times, but I never recall any "extreme pressure" to my mouth. Perhaps one of us is wearing it wrong...

I still have nothing. Never have I been hit in the mask, and started bleeding from the mouth as a result. Probably because you didn't have barbs of metal cemented to your teeth.

I still don't quite see how it could happen.  the jaw pad is on, well, your jaw -- not on your lips.  And, if your mouth is shut and your teeth are together, there shouldn't be much relative movement here.

 

That said, it's been many many years since I wore braces.

My HSM pad covered my bottom teeth...yet I was assured I was wearing it right...
