As usual, ignorant broadcasters carping about this correct call add some entertainment value.

those commentators are brutal and some of the comments on your site, gil, are absolutely horrendous; honestly I've stopped looking at the comments expecting educated comments anymore, they are more for comic relief and to find out there are actually people out there dumber than I...

Unfortunately that's what we get for trying to serve as a "liaison" website between umpires (and official rules) and the fans. Just because we as a group have OBR, MLBUM, JEAPU, HW, BRD and a slew of acronyms the common baseball fan has never heard of doesn't mean the fan is receptive to the ever-important rules QOC. If I want Chicago to win, I don't care what the rule says and why the umpire was right, all I know is my team just got called out. If I want Atlanta to win, all I know is it's called "infield fly" which must mean something about the dirt boundary line at third base and who cares if the rule supports the call, and who cares if expert analysis from umps and former baseball players says it was right, I know in my heart that it was wrong because it resulted in an out and happened on the grass.

As an example, we've had a group of Phillies fans debate a group of Marlins fans (well, actually those who know rules) after Joe West used instant replay on a boundary call that ended up being ruled a spectator interference out (Charlie Manuel was tossed arguing and his protest was denied). The initial call was live ball (no interference, no HR, etc.). After IR review, it was INT. The argument from the Philly side was that even if the right call was made in the end, it doesn't matter because it wasn't called in real time, not withstanding the arguments about using replay. Some fans enjoy bending the rules for their team and it shines in comments.

The one thing I'll point to one day is that through our Appeals Board, we have a 100% affirmation rate for QOC-related calls (e.g., not that irrecusable after the fact nonsense). You simply cannot argue with a rules book.

One day I'll switch to a dedicated registered users interface and really hone in on that "reputation score."

gil, i've gotta say i really like being able to "anonymously" post on your website, mainly because if people knew who I was posting on there i would probably be told to stop commenting on the site. But I wish there was a way to get rid of the trolls that have no idea about the rules of the game and still keep the all important anonymity for users who need it like myself...

What I would suggest if you encounter a comment that's over the line, something intended to troll or incite, flag it just as you would on U-E or any other forum. When hovering over the offending comment, you'll see a down-oriented triangle on the top right of the comment, click the triangle and select the "flag as inappropriate" button. Obviously don't go overboard as your posting IP address will lose "credibility" with the commenting system, but the option is there if you need to use it.

sounds like a good plan to me. probably still wont use the flag option unless it gets WAY too bad... kind of like spectators that have no idea what they are talking about but still insist they know how to do your job better than you do...
