I had the plate for the second game of a double header HS summer ball yesterday . There was a semi-pro soccer game about to start at the football stadium behind the baseball field . R1 and the batter hits a double , R1 goes to third . About the same time the batter hits the ball a young girl starts singing The National Anthem at the soccer game . The pitcher gets the ball and throws a pitch . I'm looking at my partner and he's looking at me .  I glance out of the corner of my eye and see all of the fans standing , hand over heart , but still watching the game .I had to do something ,So I came out from the plate , called time ,spun aroud toward the flag , and put my hat over my heart . The players and coaches came pouring out of the dugouts and they , along with the players on the field , doffed their hats and faced the flag along with the fans . It was a little funny but very cool . Made me proud to be an American and an umpire !

A game in progress doesn't have to stop. But I have done the same thing out of respect.

It is beyond ridiculous that the national anthem is played before sporting events.  They have absolutely nothing at all to do with eachother.  You might as well play it in a movie theater before watching a movie or at restaurant before dinner.  Just stupid.

DEBLUE, you must not be originally from Delaware then, or if you are, I  wouldn't be making a comment like that in public.

Is that kind of remark and attitude really surprising nowadays?  Hell, our Commander-in-chief shows very little respect for the military (and by extension the country) by playing golf on Memorial Day, not returning the salute of a US Marine, not participating in a wreath-laying ceremony, etc., so why should we be shocked when someone like Delaware Blue comes on this site, disrespecting something as important as our country's National Anthem?
