If you have a corrected sitch, then explain that. "Coach, he corrected his mistake on the award." If questioned further then tell him by official interp that is the way it is.

If you have an uncorrectable sitch then explain that. "Coach, he can't correct his error."

If he still wants to debate, tell him we are done discussing it and it's time to play or that he can protest. Either way the discussion is over.

The travisty clause is moot here. The only time to use that is when a runner has safely reached a base and has no reason to return and only does so to confuse the defense.

After reading the 2007 MLBUM on this, by interpretation of the 7th item (I believe since this is coming from memory right now), it implies the runner must make an attempt to touch the base. In it, says the runner misses 2B while returning to 1B, and then get 3B on the DBT award. He corrects his mistake of missing it the first time provided he touches it the second time.

So, from this interpretation, the runner has to at least make an attempt to touch the base when returning to a previously occupied base. So, a "gross" miss can be interpreted as not a reasonable attempt to touch the base while returning to a previously occupied base on the play. So, if the runner is several steps beyond 2B and makes no attempt to touch it on the way back to 1B, then the appeal is upheld even if he touches it on the way to 3B after the award.

This is how I interpret the situation provided by the MLBUM. Am I way off on that interpretation?

DING DING DING!!!! I think we have a winner for satisfying a rat coach's need for an explanation in the case of a gross miss while returning to 1B, as applied to an appeal following a supposed LTB ruling.

Man I love this forum!!!! After reading through the whole thread, I got a good handle on the rulings for the OP and for the revised sitch, then read through several ways to handle it when the sh*tstorm comes from the dugout, where the only "real" issue left open for debate was how to explain the gross miss interp, and now we have that as well.
