Vets hold your answers for 24 hours please!

I noticed a "first play" question in the Rules forum. I had a different "first play"-related incident in a district final this week. It was a FED game, but the answer should be the same in all codes.

No runners, outs don't matter. B1 hits a ground ball up the middle. F6 dives for the ball and gloves it. Knowing he can't get the runner, he flips to F4 who throws the ball into the dugout (a) just before, or (b) just after BR touches 1B.

Place the BR in (a) and (b). (Obviously, only one of those happened in the actual game.)

Maven means the ball was released from F6 just before or just after BR touched first, not that it went into the dugout then.  And I hope that's not to much of a spoiler.

With this slight correction, that's exactly right.

Oh -- I envisioned the play exactly backwards.  That could change the entire answer. Or not.  lol.

If im not mistaken (usually am) since its not the first throw after the ball was caught the runner is entitled to 2 bases beyond last legally touched.

Well, I guess you're the only newbie on the forum. Congratulations!

You're applying the right rule, but you have it a little garbled. A runner is entitled to a 2-base award after an overthrow that goes OOP. The two bases is measured TOT, except when the throw is the first play by an infielder, in which case it's 2 bases from TOP. (See award table after FED 8-2-9; same as OBR 7.05g)

So the question is: was the "relay throw" from F6 to F4 a play? If so, then F4's throw was not the first play by an infielder, and your answer to the quiz in post 5 would be correct. If not, then F4's throw was the first play, and the answer to both (a) and (b) would be "2B."

Juuuuust the right amount of explanation, without giving away the answer!

The relay throw to F4 was not the first play. Two bases from TOP unless BR had already reached 1st base.

Right. Would you like to say why?

Right again. And I misspoke in post #8.

A play is an attempt to retire a runner or BR.  The flip to F4 was not an attempt to retire the BR.
