I can speak for Alliance chapter here in DFW Tx. We have about 10 Districts that won't sign our contract. They want the new UIL contract. Which changes the travel fees. The UIL wants to pay .581/2 cents per mile for the Official that travels the furthest. Then pay the other Official 10.00 rider fee. Will here in Texas our Officials are spread out so it is virtually impossible to carpool.

As a chapter we voted not to do the Districts that won't sign our current contract. That is it in a nut shell.

Our State meeting is going on now so next week we should have more info.

I've been following this. In the latest article they describe wanting to pay a portion of baseball umpires from the take at the gate. This will never work. Baseball is not a revenue generating sport until you get to mid level minor leagues.

Elsewhere I posted about this using UNC as my example. I believe UNC is a perfect example of why this will not work. They are a perennial powerhouse in both basketball and baseball. Last year UNC had a combined attendance at all of their home games including the play-ins to the CWS of just about 40,000. One basketball game at the Dean Smith Center they will get 30,000+ people. Now this is the attendance levels for one of the best college teams in the country. Bring this down to what the average team in the country had in attendance and I bet it will be less than half of that. All making it unreasonable to pay officials from the gate at the college level. Take that down to the high school level and you're looking at even less.

Baseball umpires are paid less than their counterparts in football and basketball and the reason has always been some deviation of 'we'd pay the umpires more if it were a revenue generating sport' like the other two.

This is a bad idea.

Revenue is very important. If it's not the gate, then it's someone's taxes. I work football as well as baseball and the V fee is within a dollar. He it is looked at as the time spent. V softball pays less than V baseball and V football. ALso in Football you can have between 5 and 8 officials (some of our schools use officials for the chains and the clock). That adds up to a lot for one game. It's a good thing they have that revenue to rely on.

In the real world, it's the revenue generators that get the money. Why do you think the Yankees can spend so much? They generate the revenue.

I'm not taking any side in this specific issue, just contributing my $.02.
