As long as it wasn't a bunt, "IFF if fair"

He probably lost the ball.

Has Scott been teaching you a few things?

I'll admit to something. Story time.

In the first inning of my first game at the LL Regional, I did the same thing. R1+R2, we had a wild pitch where the runners moved up, and I didn't notice. So on the pop-up on the next pitch in front of the plate, I called an infield fly. First time in 25+ years I screwed up in this way. *Great* place for it. Ball fell in front of the plate and the runners stayed put. The BR was standing on first and I told him he was out.

The third base coach came down to argue that it wasn't ordinary effort and U1 thought he was telling me that we had R2+R3. But *the coach* didn't realize his runners moved up, either. He was arguing ordinary effort and not getting far.

Finally, U1 came down and let us both in on the secret. Then I called both managers out, told them what had happened (the ball fell, R2+R3 stayed put and the BR was still standing on first, so I didn't have to move anyone).

This was in the first half-inning of my first plate game in front of the regional UIC, the 3 other members of the staff, and the other umpires (our game was the only one going on at the time).

The upside for me was that it couldn't get any more embarrassing. I was determined to not go into the tank and I didn't -- I didn't miss a pitch the entire game (that I knew) and worked hard to get everything right the rest of the week, too. It was a humbling moment and reminded me that maybe I had a little bit of hubris that I needed knocked out of me. And things turned out well in the end.

Now that it's over, I'm glad this happened. Taught me a valuable lesson and it didn't happen on ESPN8, the Ocho.

I had a similar brain fart. R2 stole and we didn't communicate the sitch change. Badda-bing-badda-boom. 3BC hollers, "It's not an IFF situation."

Now there's a piece of humble pie. We will all screw the pooch. Glad I got my 1 mistake outta the way early in my career B)
