I was just told today was Chinese New Year and that it will be year of the Rat. I think that means it’s going to be a long one for umpires.;)

Set the rat traps early and often.

You mean like, coach why don't you come over here so we can discuss balls & strikes.

While I've never laid this trap, ohh how I've wanted to...

Occasionally, I like to ask the coach directly, "Are you arguing balls & strikes?" when they get out of hand with it. I've actually had a few who have responded with, "Yes." Needless to say, they've learned that rule real quick.

I'll have to remember that one. Not that I would actually bait a coach in order to toss him, but if he's dumb enough to admit to arguing balls and strikes, then he deserves to be tossed.

I ask it not to bait them, but to get them to realize what they're doing. When they respond with "No," then I'll ask them what they want to discuss; and we'll get down to 'brass tacks,' as they say, so that we can get on with the game.

I witnessed two ejections during the first year of my adventure as a umpire but I hope that the year of the rat does not put the jinks on us umpires and I sincerely hope that they are wrong thanks umpire 08 Deer Park Tx

At Jim Evans they teach that when they come out to ask "you know coach your out here questioning balls and strikes" our "you know coach your out here on a judgement call" so they know they think maybe i should stop

Now now - be nice.

No coaches = no teams = no games = no need for umpires.

And don't make me start posting links to the posts where the umpire was, shall we say, undereducated.

A buddy of mine was working a USSSA tournament and the coach comes down to "discuss" his strikezone. Chuck told him that it open for diecussion and he needed to go back to his coach's box. He stood there for a second gathering his thoughts and asked if he could ask one question. Chuck told him if it was about his zone, no. Then he asked if he still had a question. He looked like a goldfish opening and closing his mouth three or four times, said no and walked away. Not another peep the rest of the game.

Not sure if I was wrong in saying this, but, in Cooperstown last year I had a 3BC come down the line after squawking on a couple of pitches. He asked for time which I granted. When I discovered he was walking towards me (to "talk" about my zone) when he passed his batter who thought the coach wanted to talk to him, I walked towards him and said, "Coach, unless you're going to ask me what I'm having for lunch, you need to go back to the coach's box". Without a word, he turned right around and did as he was told. Not a word from him the rest of the game. Now, understand there are severe consequences for coaches who get ejected at CDP still, he left without a peep.
