OK, I read if a trouble ball, missed the as if part. There are guys that want the PU to take third and let the BU double back to the plate when the BU didn't go out. That is flat wrong and I was just trying to head off an incorrect mechanic. I will slink away now.:)

This is the FED mechanic and what we're told to use in our association. I do not agree with it at all, but when in Rome...

This topic has been a bit hard to follow, so let me see if my understanding is correct for FED. The last change I have in FED is for 2010 where it says that if the BU goes out, he stays out; and that the PU might have calls at both third and home. Right or wrong?

Silly question:

2 man, nobody on.

B1 hits a blopper down RF line.

U1 goes out to rule fair/foul.

B1 trys to advance to 2nd, but is caught in a run down.

Is it OK for U1 to come back to 1st to help with the run down?

Or is the Plate Guy supposed handle the run down all by him (or her) self?

As long as you could get into proper positioning for the rundown as the play is going away from you, I don't see why not. Some will say no because the book says so. Sometimes you can just umpire. The key is getting into proper position. Similar to PU coming up to help out during a rundown.

I agree. BU should be ready to take home, too, as PU will be taking BR to 3B on an overthrow.

Whenever there is a deviation from the book, as long as everyone involved understands, it is good to go.

As we say in the Army, if you have a doubt, check the SOP. If the SOP is wrong, change the SOP.

I don't have a problem with the BU returning to help with the pickle but he has to do it correctly. I would go to the outfield side and as the play is going away from him announce he has this end.

Definitely. If you're going to try to get to the infield side, you're going to cross the path at some point. That's not a risk I'm willing to take.

Also the look is not all that different than the umpire. If one is in and the other is out then both sides are covered.
