I'm a coach????

So I think I'm a coach now for my daughters new volleyball team.

Here's how it happened...

My daughter just completed another season of volleyball in our county's parks and rec and she is coming a long way in her ability. She asked to join an advanced league/clinic which was a little bit pricey, but she is not only worth it I also believe every child needs a sport to call their own and as long as she likes volleyball I'm in. I was especially happy because she got a bum deal on the team she was assigned to this past season. Her team only won 1 match all season long. I was concerned she'd loose interest after having a bad experience. My wife thinks I'm mean when I say this, but here it goes anyway... While she is a good player, certainly well above average, she shouldn't have been the best player on her team, but for better or worse she was.

This league/clinic is designed to teach advanced skills to kids 8-12 years old and they learn from a really good instructor who is a local HS coach and is involved in the Jr Olympic program for an hour, then play 2 non-competitive matches with the instructor jumping onto the court giving instruction and encouragement. By the end of the first hour of instruction my daughter was serving overhand very well. My daughter was so proud of herself.

Back to how I think I became coach...

We arrived early and I started talking to the other parents and learned the other kids names who were assigned to our team. All but one other of the teams played together in their fall league and had coaches. So when the instructor was asking who was on "team 2" I had learned the girls names and pointed them out to the instructor. From that point through the rest of the day I was the coach. I had been under the assumption there would have already been a coach assigned.

Today I got a coaches email from the instructor so I guess I'm it. Thankfully this is not a competitive league. Unfortunately my daughter is already asking me if she can play in their competitive league which starts in January. I need to find out how not to become coach if she does.

Don't you hate geting a job when you weren't looking. I made the mistake of trying to show my son how to apply an arm bar correctly. I had taken him to Las Vegas for karate training. He was one of six that young in a Jujitsu class. The instructor walked up behind me and said we should demostrate, ending with me getting arm barred by a very attractive instructor and both sons laughing at me. :yippie:
