Appeal after the third out

R2, R3. One out. B4 lines to F1 for the second out. F1 then throws to F4, who tags R2 for the third out. Meanwhile R3, who did not tag up, advanced and crossed the plate prior to R2 being tagged. Everyone on the defense except F8 has left the field. DM tells PU that the run should not count because R3 did not tag up.

a. The manager has made a valid dead-ball appeal. R3’s run is nullified.

b. The defensive team can retake the field, make a valid liveball appeal and get R3’s run nullified.

c. The plate umpire should not have counted the run in the first place.

d. The defense cannot appeal. R3’s run scores.

I guess I missed the part where is says "For the purpose of this rule, the defensive team has 'left the field' when the pitcher and all infielders have left fair territory on their way to the bench or clubhouse."

For some reason, I had the (erroneous) notion in my head that one was infielders and one was ALL fielders. Not sure where I got that.

I believe that this was included into the rule book within the past couple of years. It has been an official interp, just not in the rule book until recently.
