R1, 1 out. B1 hits a ground ball to F6, F6 throws (poor throw) to F3, ball gets past F3. The base coach intentionally stops the the ball.

My ruling (NFHS): The now BR is out and R1 stays at first base.

Am I correct? What is your ruling?

You got it right according to 3-2-3

...If the coach is judged by the umpire to interfered intentionally with the thrown ball, or interfers in fair territory, the interference penalty is invoked. PENALTY: The ball is dead immediately and the runner is out. The BR or R may be out as in 7-3-5 and 6-4-2g. The other runners return as in 8-2-8.

Here's the answer I originally posted elsewhere:

Off the top of my head I don't think there is a rule specifically directed towards this. So everybody's favorite but often mis-applied rule 9.01© comes into effect. ( Anything not specifically covered in the rules is at the judgment of the umpire.)

A crotchety old umpire I admire told me "Never reward bad baseball" And I have kept that in the back of my mind when applying judgment calls. So here's my ruling:

Time, BR to 1st, R1 to 2nd.

The coach's boneheaded move cost him potiential bases. I have no way of knowing for certain it would have gone into DBT since the coach intentionally stopped the ball.

Well apparently there is for FED, but is there one for OBR?

I may change my answer from above to default to the FED rule if it's not covered elsewhere.

I couldn't find any mention of this situation in the BRD, but in the Study Guide:College Baseball Rules '08 (NASO), it specifically mentions on page 82:

"A runner is out if...

c.A base coach intentionally interferes with a thrown ball. If the ball inadvertantly touches a coach, it is not interference (3-3b, 8-3j), See Play 3-97. Coaches have an inherent obligation to avoid fielders in the act of fielding a thrown ball. Interference in fair territory is considered intentional. In case of multiple runners, the umpireshall call out the runner that most benefited from the interference, most likely the lead runner."

"Play 3-97

With a runner on second, B1's ground ballis fielded but the throw gets by F3. The coach falls to the ground and covers the ball as R2 scores and B1 advances to second. Ruling: If the umpire judges the interference was intentional, the ball is dead, and the lead runner, R2, declared out. B1 is returned to first."

J/R also covers this in "Chapter 13, Section V: Coach's Interference"

I'm too lazy to type it all out, but essentially says the same thing.
