I had the game on in the background yesterday and couldn't really pay attention. I think it was ny against someome. Did they really swing during an intentional walk to get the pitch count up?

Apparently, don't know another reason. However, if you gonna be bush why not do it twice during at bat? LL has an extra wide catcher's box so seems to be no reason to actually throw pitches.

I think he was accidentally swinging. He was still looking at his coach when he swung at the ball. But if he did it on purpose, then he is smart. Why not waste a pitch and just swing.

Yes he did swing. It was Warner Robbins vs. New York. NY was in the field and had a 3-0 count and the Warner Robbins batter swung to get the pitch count up. He wound up walking with a 4-1 count. After changing pitchers the next batter parked one deep up the banking for a home run.

and would have put the next one right in the kids pocket....just my opinion

Okay... LOL... Maybe I missed something here because I did watch the whole game.

So a kid hits a home run in the 1st inning. Later in the game he comes up to bat again and the NY manager decides to intentionally walk him with runners in scoring position. (No problem). The GA manager realizes the kid pitching is getting deep into his pitch count and decides to have his kid swing at a pitch. (Not a bad idea). So the plan works on both sides. One manager gets his intentional walk to a dangerous hitter and the other manager was able to burn the opposing pitcher in return, forcing a pitching change. Now, the next batter cracks a deep home run breaking the game wide open in GA's favor.

Question for TH3: Is this the part where you would "put the next pitch in his pocket"? (implying you would plunk the next batter)...

and i think iwas going to go with "in the ribs" but the pocket seemed friendlier!

deuce - not that I care too much, but the comment about the retribution is because this is a bush move. It's not, in my opinion, 'smart'; it is cheap.

and of course, for the record, i am not REALLY advocating anyone ever throwing a picth at anyone...i just thought it was an incredibly bush move

I've seen a few times in games I've worked. Most of the time I've called it a ball, because they weren't trying to actually strike at it. And that's the definition of a strike. As lazy wave of the bat, at a ball ten feet from the strike zone should not be called, IMO.

It would be an interesting conversation w/the OM.

OM: Why didn't you call that a strike?

PU: He was obviously not attempting to hit the pitch.

OM: But, he swung at it!

PU: Yes, but only to run up the pitch count, not to hit it.

Of course, how foolish would the OM look going out to ask for a strike?! :)

I had a LL Major manager ask me at the beginning of last season (when he saw they had removed the no-pitch IBB rule that was in place for one season) if he could have his F1, while runners were on base, intentionally execute illegal pitches in order to rack up four balls without actually throwing any pitches. I couldn't find anything in the rules that said he couldn't do that. I did tell him not to try it while I was working a game as I might consider that unsportsmanlike conduct (instructing a player to intentionally commit an 'illegal' act) and there's only one penalty for that offense!
