I just got a letter today from LL about this clinic. If there's still openings I am thinking about going to the two-day clinic in Williamsport for $85 for the march session. Can anyone tell me if these clinics and what they consist of? Are they good for someone that has a good but improving grasp of the rules and mechanics? I assume it's mostly classroom ed. Do they do anything else, it does say I need to bring a mask and baseball glove and the schedule is vague about what happens.

I went last March. It is a good deal for the $$ and a must if you have "above state" LL aspirations. Good mix of classroom and on-field. The on-field mechanics have to be kept on a level that rookie umps can handle but the classroom stuff is excellent. Don't know if the format will change any as the LL UIC retired and a new one has not yet been named to the best of my knowledge. The food is also pretty decent but if you opt for the dormitory sleeping arangements beware!!

The biggest thing in my opinion is the chance to visit the complex if you have never been. If the weather has been cool and the ground is frozen/thawing then you might not get into the stadiums.

Thanks, I'm definitely leaning towards it now. I like the part where the on field is geared more towards rookies, would help me ease into that step a bit easier. Though I'm an umpire, I do have a slight anxiety problem so I'd be worried about going and making a fool of myself. From your experience, which mechanics did they cover and not cover?

They will do cage work with some field mechanics. I know two of the probable instructors and they will do a good job. They worked under Andy in both class and field for quite a while.

I was looking at that myself. The price is certainly right if you could gain anything from it. If I read it right, two days, room and board and meals. Sounds like a good deal.

I'm still not sure, but if you do it, maybe I'd do it.

The field work will be very low pressure. Unlike other umpire schools/clinics/camps no one will be belittled and the sarcasm from the instructors will be kept to a minimum. Definately a good opportunity for new umpires.

On another note, you will probably not get 3/4 man mechanics. Likely the field mechanics will totally concentrate on 2 man. If you are looking at getting evaluated at a regional tournament this clinic will not totally replace going to your regional center for training.

I'll have to look at the dates again, but I'm seriously considering it. I think they had some dates in October or November too.

As far as I know Sept and March were the only dates. Sept is too busy for me, March is good for me. You might be thinking of Bristol for regional school.

Yeah, if they can hold on until Friday. But it appears the East Region holds a clinic (not school) each February, seems to be only $50. Maybe I'd do that one when available instead. Seems to be pretty much the same thing and that I could technically commute to.

I went to the Bristol school a couple of years ago and it was a great experience. My class was also only about 30 umpires so we got a little more individual attention and focus. I've never been to Williamsport but I'm sure I'll go sometime soon.

For the price of any of these LL schools/clinics, it's really a steal of a deal. I went to the 4 day Jim Evans clinic in New Jersey last year and a good bit of the content was the same. Evans was a bit more in-depth but for youth umpires, the LL schools are great.

Been to both weekend clinics and week long schools in Williamsport & Bristol. You will have fun and learn alot. It's informative, but not high stress. If you go to the weekend clinic in Bristol, there will be 100-200 people there. if you go to the school, it is limited to about 30.
