College wood bat league, using NCAA rule set. Ball hit to third base, ball glances off the third baseman's glove and slowly rolls toward fence . BR reaches 1st base, then the ball finds the only hole under the fence that we had observed in our pregame walkaround. Because the runner had acquired first base prior to the ball going out of play, I awarded third base. Was that correct?

John is correct, award from TOP. If the ball had stopped and he knocked it out trying to pick it up, then give him third.

Doesn't matter the time it goes out of play. Just like with a ground rule double over or under the outfield fence ------ the runner may have already aquired first when it went out of play but he only gets second not third.
