Plate Meeting

Once I was asked what kind of strike zone I have. I adviced coach tell his kids come to the plate swinging their bats.

I don't know if it was this thread or a similar one on another board, but when asked about where your zone is, tell them,"Let's see the pitching first!" :TD:

Then shut it down if and when it happens during the game. You don't need to warn them for it at the plate meeting when nothing has happened yet. It just gets everyone on edge and creates unnecessary tension between you and the coaches.

I don't warn them about sniper fire or anything like that at the plate meeting, but our local league UIC tells us to tell the managers at the plate meeting that we only want to be dealing with the managers. I don't always say this because if a coach comes out calmly to ask me a question, then I am most likely going to answer it.

The dealing with only the manager only really deals with having to talk to him only during an argument. It helps to not have multiple coaches on you at the same time.

As for the bench jockeying... if its in the rules (such as NCAA) then EVERYONE knows about it already. Its just a matter of getting it and getting it early.

In Fed the Manager is required to be at the plate meeting but the coaches and team captains can be too. In LL allstars I bring both staffs out so they ALL know I will be watching all safety violations.

I started working in an annual tournament last year that goes by modified FED rules. We flip for home team every game, and usually the coaches will bring a player or two with them in the younger divisions. I have yet to hear of any complaints about players being at the plate meetings. It seemed like having the kids there set a good tone.

If the team wants to bring a player rep to the plate, I got no issue with it. However they do not NEED to be there in most cases. The only thing that I ask of them is that they let the coach talk for their team... I dont need input from the kids.
