Rules Seminar for Coaches

:crazy:Not like they will remember them but has anyone ever conducted a pre-season rules seminar for coaches (Daddy ball guys, not HS). I still get the old base your going to plus 1 argument and I honestly feel like I wasting my life

If you have could you a) tell me how it went for everyone involved what items did you cover.

My league conducts multiple coaches clinics that are geared to help them be better coaches (in-house league). But we do get time in those clinics to cover somethings that come up every year and also field questions.

At the levels where we have balks (we add: player pitch (3/4grades), stealing after the pitch (5/6), leading off (7/8), and 7 inning games (9-12)) I spent 30mins covering what is legal and not. Most of the other stuff is dumb Qs like what's the K-zone (what's in the book?).

We also cover in-house rule changes and FED changes from the previous year. We still get problems, but it makes life a little easier to be able to say we covered it in the clinic.

You'd be suprised what they remember. We get a 2 hour block at our Coach Meeting before every season starts.

We tried to figure out what issues coaches have problems with: Dead Ball Strike, Appeals, Type A/B OB, Batters Interference, Slide or Seek to Avoid, Basepath violations, and how to ask an umpire to go for help. Then, we split up: the lower leagues, (U9) listen to one of the Training Staff talking about munchkin ball issues: the older teams watch the JEA Balk Video. It's all done on Power Point, with photos, diagrams, etc.

For the ones that show up, I've found they learn a lot: I get great feedback, and we rarely have problems with them. The ones that don't show up, well, that's why we have an ejection procedure.

The NCHSAA requires coaches attend a state rules clinic or be assessed a $400 fine...

Humphhh..

At our rules clinics every year, you are lucky to get 1-2 dozen total coaches show up...Where's the enforcement?

But, on the other hand, why do they need to show up anyway?? They already know all the rules and are more than glad to inform you without your even need asking at any time they deem as such...

So the next time that you can't remember the rules and need to go for help, don't go to your partner; there is a much more knowledgable source readily available to correct you on your deficiencies! If you can't remember "does a tie go to the runner"? or "the hands are part of the bat" or "was that pitch a strike or ball on this coaches team?"--just feel free to ask for help from the various expert rats around the field...

I have taught coaches clinics. It helps with some, others don't care to learn so they aren't going to. One thing I always stress is what is protestable and what isn't. I also stress that if they feel we have made a rules error, protest, don't stand there and get yourself tossed, that's stupid.
