  1. Awesome, this is exactly the case I was thinking! I'm glad I interpreted it correctly! Thanks again!
  2. I finally got my rulebook in, and was reading the book. I haven't done the case book(just going through Rules and Illustrated Rules together, so sorry if this is easily answered later...) I see 2-29-3 says: "also, a force situation is reinstated when a runner retreats pas the base to which he was forced to advance". So this would mean that, given R1: Batter hits to become BR. R1 runs, rounds 2nd, and for some reason decides to go back towards 1st. So he retouches 2nd legally, and continues back toward first. Fielders then tag 2nd base. R1 is now out on the force, correct? Assume there was also an R3 who crossed the plate on this play (and 2 outs). The 3rd out would now be made at 2nd on a force, so no run, correct?

    Hit by pitch

Thank you very much for that quote! The answer to that makes me entirely agree with Maven then.

    Hit by pitch

In NFHS: Rule 8 Baserunning SECTION 1 WHEN BATTER BECOMES A RUNNER ART. 1 . . . A batter becomes a runner with the right to attempt to score by advancing to first, second, third and home bases in the listed order when: ... d. a pitched ball hits his person or clothing, provided he does not strike at the ball; or 1. If he permits the pitched ball to touch him (7-3-4), or if the umpire calls the pitched ball a strike, the hitting of the batter is disregarded except that the ball is dead. It is a strike or ball depending on location of the pitch. 2. If a batter’s loose garment, such as a shirt that is not worn properly, is touched by a pitched ball, the batter is not entitled to first base Based on '2' there, I suspect the answer in NFHS is "It is the umpire's discretion", though I would think it would be a hit-by-pitch in this case. I don't see anything in the rulebook as far as I can find that says what 'worn properly' means. Also, this doesn't answer OBR obviously. EDIT TO ADD: I would trust Maven more than me on this, I'm just a beginner ump. From MY perspective it comes down to 'worn properly', which I didn't see a good citation for. ANOTHER interesting question would be: What about batting-gloves in the back pocket with the fingers hanging out? I would personally wonder if THOSE are considered part of the uniform? Another one: What about folks who wear their batting gloves with the tabs 'sticking out'? I have seen ones designed with the velcro 'reversed' such that it is part of the design...
  5. One question I might have: when does the "swing end" and "follow through" start? One might argue this is possible batters interference with the catcher, and that the "swing" becomes "follow through" once the ball is struck.
  6. I believe you saw the 'skunk in the outfield' play. My understanding is guidance is that it is completely legal (see this article: https://austinumpires.org/skunkplay.html), but umpires should be careful to ensure that R1 travels directly to one of the bases "when a play is being made on him". I've seen references to this play in the past that claimed that NFHS guidance is that this is NOT a "travesty of the game", and to let it play out.
  7. Hi all- I got recruited this spring to umpire my town's youth baseball games, NFS ruleset modified by "JBO". Ages are ~4th grade to 8th grade across 3 different divisions (only 1 man I believe). Seemingly the ump-shortage here has resulted in the individual towns needing to provide umps to games as the regional organization cannot guarantee umps, so I'm primarily going to work out of the fields down the street from me! Last year apparently they had a couple of cancelled games due to lack of officals (and did some last moment facebook recruiting for anyone willing, and I picked up a game last year!). SO, after a brief umpire seminar held at a local school, roughly 3 hours of work, and a few hundred bucks in gear/equipment, I'll be covering the plate a few nights a week starting next month. I'll likely be mostly lurking here, but wanted to say hi anyway! Any folks on Oregon's west-side with advice/etc is obviously welcome and appreciated Hobby wise, I've got a decent hobby machine shop that I play in, and a sports car that I tinker with ('90 300zx TT), plus play softball 1 or 2 nights a week. so, all!
