  1. However unlikely this situation is: With two outs and a baserunner (let's say on first), the batter hits one out and as he is rounding first passes the baserunner, with TWO OUTS. I realize the batter-runner is out the instant he passes, but does the baserunner get to come around and score, or is basically a timing play?
  2. Player bunts, bat falls in front of the plate, ball rolls forward and hits said bat and dies in fair territory. This is nothing, correct? Ball in play.
  3. Why is that every so often, after an inning ends, you'll see a base umpire pull out a stopwatch from his pocket? This makes zero sense to me.
  4. Is this the pitcher "unnecessarily delaying the game?"
  5. Hmm, what is the actual MLB rule that prevents this?
  6. Is this 8.05d?
  7. Hi everyone, Can someone please clarify the MLB rule for batter interference with the catcher after strike three and runner going? Is it a judgment call on the part of the umpire as to whether to call the runner out or send him back to his base at time of pitch? In NFHS I believe it is a judgment call on the part of the umpire as to whether the runner could have been retired. Thanks.
  8. Thanks, maven. My instincts were correct on this one.
  9. Runners on first and third, one out, 0-1 count. Batter swings and misses at a wild pitch, both runners attempting to advance, and the on-deck batter inexplicably picks up the live ball. Is there a specific NFHS rule prescribed for this? Clearly it's interference by the offensive team, but what is the proper way to handle this situation? Clearly if there were two outs and two strikes, it'd be easy to call the batter out and end the inning. But with one out and this being strike two, is the runner closest the plate out?
  10. I was always under the impression that if you go to your mouth on the mound, that's a balk. Is that not correct?
  11. Can someone please summarize the pro rules for pitchers going to their mouth? Specifically: 1. Are pitchers allowed to go to their mouth anywhere except on the rubber? Does this include the dirt on the mound? 2) What is the penalty for a pitcher going to his mouth, not wiping and then engaging the rubber? Is this a ball to the batter or a balk? Thank you!

    My newest one.

Wow, I can't tell you how many ejections I should have racked up my now if the standard is to throw someone out whenever he says, "That's the second one you've missed today." I mean, if there's a "f******" intensifier in there, then I'd throw him out. But definitely surprised.

    My newest one.

I have a question. What if he leaves out the F-bomb? Is that an ejection as well?
  14. I don't remember exact words. Something to that effect of, "I'm not going to listen to you saying I favor one team over another. Get back in the box."
  15. Hi everyone, I'm a third-year ump, no ejections to date. Yesterday I was doing a men's league game, latter half of the game, team's player-coach comes to bat, runner on 2B. First pitch is a called strike, he sort of lets out a sigh of contempt, turns to face me and says something to the effect of, "Come on. That's been a ball for my pitcher all game long. Be consistent!" This is all in a moderately raised voice, with emphasis on the word "consistent" so that pretty much everyone in the infield can hear him.He then steps out of the box. I sort of engage him at this point, telling him I don't want to hear anything about favoring one team over another or any comments calling my integrity into question. Meanwhile - I guess while infielders are straining to hear what's going on - the runner on 2B swipes third. Time was never called. After that and while stepping into the box, the batter says, "You've had no control over this game." I feel like I should have ejected him there, but didn't. Couple quetions: 1. Does this sort of behavior warrant an ejection? 2. Should I have called time during my exchange with him? I definitely could not (and didn't think twice about) sending the runner back, since I never called time. Thanks for your input!
  16. - Bring a loud voice. From the very first day, you're going to be expected to yell at full throat your name before every rep on the field. If you don't yell you'll hear about it. -Physique: I think they want guys who are in shape and look the part. They'll never explicitly say it. You DO NOT need to have the body of Adonis to make it through or be selected. - Get ready to throw away lots of habits you've deveoped umpiring. It's their way or the highway. - Commit yourself to studying the rules. You go through a series of ten question quizzes, none of which are very hard. The first one is total memorization of dimensions of the field, other numbers, etc. -Equipment: there's a point of emphasis right away on the equipment not making the umpire. They have protective gear, though it's nothing to write home about. All you need is a cup, really. Most guys bring their own clothes, gear, etc. Let me know if you have other questions.
  17. I just don't understand why there's been a backorder for months now. I'm sure there are plenty of people ready to shell out for them if only they're in stock.
  18. Hi everyone, I want to order charcoal Gerry Davis base pants, but they've been backordered since time immemorial. I have the Honig's polywools and like them a lot, but most of the guys I work with have GD, and the colors don't match well. My question is, who makes charcoal base pants that are closest in color to GD's? Thank you for your help!
  19. I ordered mine from Monkey yesterday, and now it says they're out of stock. So it was apparently their last.
  20. TI or SL? TI Can I ask where you purchased from? Surprised a place has three of these in stock!
  21. How do you think the MLB guys remove the All-Star logo, etc. from their helmets? Goo-gone?
  22. Hopefully the 4000 is just as awesome!
  23. Well, I was told by HRM that the mask comes with a 30 day warranty (really?). But given all the rave reviews of All-Star's customer support and loyalty, I'll take my chances. Not that I expect anything to go wrong in the first place.
  24. Is that only for the first year or two or is it sort of like an unspoken life of the mask deal?
