  1. Had the same thing last year on a play at third. Ball went right over the bag. She, DC, said(yes it was a she manager. They were one of the worst teams ever but their uniforms matched and they had the best after games snacks!)"No way, no way. That ball went over the bag" AS she ran out on the field. I said "It did go over the bag. That is why it is fair" She stopped and just walked right off. I got one last night. Coach said between innings "Can my kid step out of the box between pitches?" I didn't even understand the question. I had to have him explain it to me, and yes he ment can his kid just step out. "Yes coach" It never ends.
  2. They missed the tag two or three times. It was odd. Both teams were moving slow. Plus the R3 did a good job. Once he say him go to first, he was on his way home. They were 16 and under. These kids were good,.
  3. The point is I can. I have warned the coach to control his fan. I can eject. You said in your other post I don't know what league you can eject a coach for the fans. Well in the crappy rec league I do you can. I have never done it but I have been on the field for other Umps to do it.
  4. I will never ever get this. Don't they understand if we had it our way every pitch would be a strike? Like you really wanted it to keep going on.
  5. Hey I'm just telling you what I was told.
  6. Toss the coach, I thought I said that. Also I want to make this clear, I'm talking about a fan saying "Oh that was a ball" or "He was safe blue!" I'm only talking about a fan getting personal or crossing the line. If I here "Blue, you are f@#$ing us" or "That is 2 S%$^^y calls today" then I'm giving a warning. Also important to know I'm only doing this is the worst of leagues. I have found the better the game, the better the fan.
  7. I was afraid of an over throw and the runner making a run to third. I should have known better, these are two of the better teams in their states in their age groups. Ok, I guess I was right. I got to first and give him a fast "I'm here". Ok I feel better.
  8. I was working with a kid last night who went there last year. I told him they were slow getting back to people. He said samething happened last year to him and all the sudden out of the blue they started emailing and returning calls. He said that during the season you never hear from them. He said don't worry, they will call.
  9. I'm doing that tonight! If I get a loud fan and it is becoming an issue I warn the coach. One league I do states "Coach is incharge of the fans" Just a simple "Coach, I'm not hearing it all day. That is your warning." I say it loud enough for the fan to hear. It gets them to shut up. Am I going to toss the coach because one of the fans is being a jerk? No, but it doesn't mean I can't warn. Most times I just leave them alone. No matter what happens, anything close and you are going to get one side complaining. I learned along time ago just leave it alone and it will stop.
  10. Runner on third and first. One out. I'm PU. Pitcher does a pickoff move to first and runner on first gets into run down(I think he did this on purpose, doesn't matter). BU umps gets into postion in B to watch the run down. I stay at home to make sure runner on third scores, he does. As he scores I run up the first baseline to get in a good view to assist with the rundown. They tag the runner, and BU gets the out. My question is, was I right in going to first or should I have been going to third to prepare for a play there? After the game the BU said I was right in coming up the line, but still I'm not sure. Thanks.
  11. In one league I used to do got a odd email last year with the subject "Make sure you are properly equipment" The email went on to say how all Umps need to make sure they have proper equipment from top to bottom. The next time I umped I asked one of the other guys what that was about. Apparently another ump took the field without a cup and took one right off the, umm how do you say, underside and busted a nut. Out for the rest of the season. I also got an updated mask, made sure to get the throat guard. I don't want to take one off of my throat.
  12. Great for you. Tons of game but lots of fun. How do they do it? They make about ten times as much as we do and get to rub elbows with guys we dream about. Sure there are negatives but they work nine months a year and make a ton.
  13. This is my third year umping and my first year doing legion and above. So basically I'm a puppy when it comes to this. Today I noticed two huge difference between my partner Reggie, who was BU, and I, who was PU clearly. 1. The ability to express his calls faster. Let me explain. When Reggie would make a call it was a solid, perfectly timed. When I would make call it was not as well timed. Like I had a foul tip for a K. Perfect mechanic, but I have think it through. I'm thinking " Pitch, saw contact, saw catcher catch it, didn't hear ball hit ground, ok Foul Tip, out." I believe with more training and more games I will out grow this and things will become easier. 2. Being in the right place at the right time. Reggie is in his mid fifties and does this as he is preparing for retirement. He is not in top shape and really doesn't move well. I'm in my late 20's and in pretty good shape. Even with this he still seems to find himself in the right spot. Why? Because Reggie has seen so many more games and plays then me that he can make to his spot because he knows where the play is going while I have to use my speed to make up ground. Just another advantage the Vets have over us Rookies. Again these are just two things and I know there are more. Does anyone else have any?
  14. +1. Can't be wrong if you call it the right way.
  15. 100% Right! In one league I used to do one year I was incharge of training kids for the first two weeks of one season. I had 10 games the first week with 10-15 new umpires. Why was I put incharge? Because I had being doing it for about 4 years and I was a SR ump. I shouldn't have been training these kids, I knew just enough to get me through a game. It was joke. Years later I'm a better ump and have something to offer these kids, not when I was incharge. The one thing I learned is just like any job if the people only want to be average at it, they will be average. Sure you get better by doing more games and seeing different things happen, but that is only going to take you so far. I'm a better ump today then I was yesterday because I want to learn, and like yawetag said when you get kids just trying to maek some extra cash you are going to get mistakes.
  16. I agree 100% with this post. You have to either be in the talk from the start, or be brought into to. If he had said"YOu guys need to do this..." Or "You guys suck" Then you are brought in, then it is your place. I had this happen a few weeks ago. Coach wouldn't stop arguing about a call(you was probably right, but it wasn't my call). AFter we walked back to our spots he said "You guys need to take your glasses off" I tossed him. He brought me into it.
  17. I don't know when you could have stepped it. 1. He handled it(I guess) What do you do? He asked and then the PU some no, and then you jumped and say your gone! That wouldn't have made any sense. I think it was the PU job to do and he didn't so not much else. 2. I would have tossed him as soon as I see the book, but as he is talking to the PU, again it would have looked odd if after they were talking you then butted in and said "oh coach I know you have been talking to him and I missed but when you came out, but you are gone!" Wouldn't have made sense. Your PU left you no shot at tossing the coach.
  18. Of Course it is a HTBT, did you see if the catcher tagged the plate? No. Why not? Because it is a HTBT.
  19. I'm not trying to be a jerk here or argue your point but guys who are assistant on traveling teams I have always found to be the least trustworthy when it comes to telling me stories about a game. Like I always like to say if they knew half as much as they think they knew, they would twice as much as they know. I don't get the issue with the call here? That is a total HTBT. You don't know what happened, and just going by some assistant rats story doesn't prove anything. The guy ask a question, got an answer, asked another question and got another one. What is the issue? Because your friend didn't like the answer, that is the issue. Besides you are talking about improving your association, what could anything you suggest improve the association to stop calls like this? Pay more money to hire better umps? That isn't happening. Clearly what we have here is an upset rat about a call that may or may not have been missed.
  20. I don't think anyone would be upset if a expirenced ump gave some suggestions to help improve an association. That is what we are all here for I would think. It sounds to me like that is just a league that maybe happy with what they have. One league I used to do had poor umps. I felt like many times it was me vs the world out there. But that league was just what it was. There were 100 ways to improve their umps but they simply didn't care because of what they paid and claiming to be a "rec league" they were happy with the umps. Maybe that is something that is going on with your association. Also let's not forget there are three sides to every story: Your, mine and the turth. I don't care how long your friend has been in baseball, still doesn't mean he wouldn't leave the part out that made him look like a jerk.
  21. It was a Juvee 1 game, so what does that make them 12 and under? It wasn't my legion league yawetag it was a league that I just get called to fill in every once in awhile. With the earlier arguement it was probably worth a toss, but what he was yelling "Watch for the pause" Over and over again I just assumedhe was yelling until I looked over there. Probably worth an ejection but I just didn't want to jump the gun.
  22. i bet after he was so excited to see he didn't retouch that the coach didn't even take then of the play in account. All he was thinking was "Oh he didn't retouch."
  23. the parking lot is over a 100 yards away and there is usually less then 15 minutes between games. Going to the car isn't really an option
