Saw this mechanic at a AAA MiLB game this weekend. R1, extra base hit down the line all the way to the corner. U1 turns/goes out and gets the fair/foul call. UIC stays home, U1 goes inside as batter/runner ends up at second with a stand up double. Now both U1 and U2 on the inside. R1 scores easily without a throw. I know in 3 man once you go out, you stay out. Maybe he just turned for the fair/foul call and didn't go out. I looked in the CCA and they don't address this. My final thought was that with R1 and an extra base hit and R1 is going to score, UIC stays home, U1 after getting fair/foul comes to the inside to box the batter/runner. Who has the answer?

http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=26373781&c_id=mlb What is going on here? I would not consider this a quick pitch for OBR. Like the announcers, I think Davidson just wasn't ready for the pitch. Puzzling.

This ought to start a pretty hearty debate. http://www.lcsun-news.com/las_cruces-news/ci_23008944/nm-high-school-ump-pushed-english-only-game

With R2 only, I was on the line. That is the mechanic. We do use go opposite of that with 2 outs though. U1 on the line, U3 in the middle.

Was this already on youtube? I captured it from espn3.com and put it on YouTube.

He did get it right the first time. Excuse the quality but here is the video of the play. Best view of the play is towards the end.

Was that the Vandy UT game?

Son's first high school game

We have been to the Tennessee high school association camp twice and then to a very well ran local camp in middle Tennessee that started up a couple of years ago. I highly recommend the local camp. It is the Mid Tenn Umpire Camp. -
I know a coach that teaches the batter to drag the bat back at eye level of the catcher to distract him as someone mentioned earlier. He coached my son's team. I used to tell him if I ever worked one of his games behind the plate I would get his players for interference for dragging the bat back during a steal. I would say that over 50% of the catcher's never caught the pitch when the batter did this. I asked a college umpire about this at a camp I went to and he said he didn't have anything on the play. So, I changed my view on that maneuver. I won't call interference unless the bat contacts the catcher like in the original post. I still think it's bush league.

No, it happened yesterday in Nashville. Repeat triple steal.

How close did the catcher get to getting interference called on him? Would you treat his actions on the steal of home differently than you would if he was coming into the strike zone to receive a pitch on a steal/play at 2nd only?

My 18 year old worked his first high school JV game tonight. He had the plate and I was on the bases. Pretty cool. Just 4 years ago he started out on coach pitch games. Now he is working JV games games in a very competitive high school district in Middle Tennessee. He was awesome of course. He said he thought he might of missed 2 pitches. The game went smooth except for a run down with a tag I think I might have missed in between 1st and 2nd. I had to listen to the coach tell me I missed that one really bad. He had a pretty good view from the 3rd base dugout, no doubt. So far this year he has umpired a few D1 intraquad games, worked several middle school games and now has his first official high school JV game under his belt. Nice to see him mature and improve over the past few years. Kinda makes a dad proud!!

My son and I happened to be at the right place and right time. We did Vanderbilt's first intrasquad game this year at Hawkin's field. All turf except for the mound. I doubt we will ever get that chance again, but I am keeping my fingers crossed. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Hawkins+Field,+Garland+Avenue,+Nashville,+TN&hl=en&ll=36.143321,-86.807412&spn=0.001507,0.002175&sll=35.998008,-86.363525&sspn=1.093259,2.227478&oq=Hawkins+Field&hq=Hawkins+Field,+Garland+Avenue,&hnear=Nashville,+Davidson,+Tennessee&t=h&z=19&output=embed&output=svembed"> -
Working 3rd base on 3 man crew and I had a whacker at 3rd base late in the game with the score tied. R2 no outs. Sac bunt right in front of the plate that was fielded by F2. He makes the throw to F5.I bang him out, pretty sure I got it right. Only problem is, that bit of uncertainty is eating away at me. This was opening day for local high school district. The more I think about it, the more uncertain i become about the call, and start feeling like I failed to "not suck". That team ended up scoring a run that inning but still lost by giving up 2 in the bottom of the 7th. Takes me a few days before I can move on.This might be the toughest aspect of umpiring for me. I need a cold adult beverage.

He lowered his shoulder on him. I should have included that in the report.

Rec ball using fed rules. I usually only have 1-2 ejections for the year. I follow the suggestions on this board for writing the EJ report. Facts, keep it short. Here is my latest. "#2 of the White Sox ran over the opposing teams catcher on a play at the plate while the catcher was in possession of the baseball. #2 was immediately ejected for malicious contact." After the game the kid said "I am not used to Rec ball. I usually play travel ball". Someone must of let him get away with MC in a travel tourney somewhere.

Anyone else see this? U1 had a big punchout on a 5-3 attempt where F3 scooped but didn't come up with the ball. He immediately reversed his call and signals safe. The play and ball were right in front of him. I think his timing was quick, but not horribly. Maybe just a brainfart? I was able to DVR the replay and had my son make a short clip for me. I cannot find it on MLB anywhere. http://youtu.be/7vTz2FrhUFM

I am at CDP this week as a cheering parent and the score book master for my 12u sons team. Our team is called the Smyrna Bugs. Any of you here this week?

Son gets assigned another league championship

He didn't suck. But one of the teams did. 13-1 run rule after 3 innings. -
Duh, I will clean my face off. Agreed. Time play at the time of the tag.

My silver Diamond iX3 Mask with the Team Wendy pads arrives today. Will try it out Friday night.

Run scores and base umpire cleans the egg off his face?

He landed on his shoulder, not serious, but did come out of the game. In rec ball and any younger travel ball games I am also going to go with safety first too. Chest and head shots will get an immediate TIME! in amost every situation with me.

18u rec ball using FED rules. R2 and R3. After the pitch F2 throws to F5 on a pickoff attempt. A rundown ensues. F1 goes to receive the throw near homeplate and gets all twisted up and slams to the ground trying to catch and tag R3 at the same time. R3 scores. No contact by R3 at all. F1 stays down, rolling around in pain. I look up and see R2 getting to 3rd. F1 still down, I call "TIME!". R2 rounds 3rd, F2 picks up the ball and they now have R2 in a rundown. I repeated the time call several times and then finally got them to shut it down. F1 still on the ground. Defensive fans pissed now because they feel they were denied an opportunity at an out. Coach is interested in why I killed it but not arguing. I said "I'm protecting your pitcher. He is obvously hurt, lying in the baseline and vulnerable to further injury if the play continues". He agreed and we played on. Should I have let it play out? If I had let it play out, I am sure the defensive fans would have been even more pissed by letting their player get trampled during the second rundown.
