Had an interesting play yesterday while working the plate in a big varsity game.  No one one, lazy fly ball to left field so I run out from behind the plate for catch/no catch.  The fielder can't make the catch and comes up throwing to second base.  From there I glance to see the batter runner on a potential back door play going back to 1st base, and it appeared he was tangled up with my partner who was coming inside.  The throw easily beat the batter runner back to first but I guess the fielder missed the tag and my partner ruled safe.  I realize my partner should have busted in immediately but he is an older veteran who works college every weekend and honestly takes shortcuts and I think believes high school games don't require a full effort.  I didn't bring it up to him because I am trying to get into college myself and didn't want to put him on the spot.  Defensive coach was upset but stayed in the dugout.

My question is I know my partner should't have been close to contact at on that play in the first place but if for some reason an umpire does hinder a runnner, can an umpire call umpire interference and protect the runner back to the bag?

What kinds of umpire interference do the rules allow us to call? And is this one of them?

He can call it but he would be wrong as was an NCAA ump who called on himself and actually awarded 2B.

I can only find umpire interference behind home plate on a throw to make a play, or a batted ball in the field.

There would be your answer.
