ball hits batter-runner

I know the rule but am just looking for some clarification on the wording for a conversation I was having a few days ago. 

batter-runner is one to two steps out of box and ball hits him in fair territory. He's out i know, but can someone please cite me the rule, I'm having trouble finding it.
