Question

Bases loaded, 1 out.  Batter hits ground ball toward F3; ball deflects off F3's glove then hits R1 who was 5-6 feet behind F3. Ball then dies in the grass in shallow RF.

Base umpire points to contact and gives emphatic SAFE mechanic, and play continues, two runs score.

At the end of play DC comes out to question ruling.  Initially he was under impression that ANY time runner is hit by fair batted ball he was out and play is dead.  Took a minute or two to convince him that was not always the case (ball deflected by F3 and hit runner behind the fielder).  DC now argues that F4, who was behind the runner, ALSO had an opportunity to make the play.  Personally I don't believe F4 was close enough to have any play, but just for the sake of discussion, should the possibility that F4 might have had an opportunity to make a play have entered in to our decision?

Not since the ball was deflected into the runner. If it wasn't he may have a argument.
