Had a JV/Varsity DH last night and the game got moved to the visiting teams field due to weather. The infield was all dirt and 95% of the fields in this area ( including LL ) are grass infields so it's been a while since I worked on a dirt infield. It took me 2 innings to get my bearings down. I kept getting out of position on several calls, usually found myself too close to the play. I finally woke up when a gapper was hit and there was a play a 2B. I was in A and got inside but did not come far enough and ended up too close at 2B when the ball got by F6 and the runner continued to 3B and I was behind the play at third. Thankfully my partner was alert and had my back on a banger at 3B. After that I realized that I needed to pay more attention to where I was at on the field and was OK. I never realized how much the grass helped as far as a beacon to help me locate my position on the infield,

We have mix of grass and skin infields so I don't have to worry about my bearings too much but I can see where it could throw you.

Same here. In fact, I find working grass infields makes it harder sometimes, especially as PU covering third with R1. Running a few feet foul always puts me right on the grass line, and there tends to be a small drop-off at that point.
