I am watching an NCAA game with a 3 man crew. Two times the BU from B has gone from inside on the baseline to stand behind second base on base hits. Is this a new mechanic?  R1, U3 is in B.. ground ball to F4, base ump moves behind 2nd base?

There is some movement toward taking plays on the bases with the ball coming toward you -- as point of plate or 3BX at home.

On balls in the infield you want to have the glove  of the fielder taking the trow at second facing you -- that wouldn't really be "behind" second base.

That's my question. The BU was continually crossing the baseline, moving out to behind second base, facing the plate. Saw it on a steal attempt and to cover 2b on a ground ball/double play possibility. I saw the same thing happening on a couple of different games I saw. Granted they started in deep B, on the baseline. Maybe going out is quicker than trying to bust inside?

The CCA has some 'conference options', so it could depend on the conference.

My assigner wants U3 in deep 'C' with R1 only. You may also see the inside umpire go out on fly balls in the 3-man. Only suppose to go on the 4 trouble balls.

The CCA manual does have some Deep B (by conference) with R1 only.

This isn't a conference option. It sounds like the umpire is just trying to work outside and take plays coming at him. I would have to see it. I know there is a really old mechanic where U3 takes steal plays from the outside like in softball.

Your conference doesn't have to approve using Deep B with R1 only. The NCAA allows that choice for everyone.
