I almost bought the farm yesterday. I was working a HS V game. This field has a very short backstop with a wall made of brick. Batter fouled one off that went straight back. The ball richocheted off the brick wall and came straight back towards the back of my head. It just missed but the ball managed to catch the left ear of my mask and rip it off my face. An inch or two to the right and it would have been lights out. I must have pissed off the baseball gods at some time during that game. I ended up taking a fast ball to the gut and the game went 12 full innings, 2hr-45m. I was glad to get home from that one.

This is why I use a helmet for very short or overhanging backstops. Two times I've had a similar thing happen - once it wasn't really that hard, the other time I was wearing the helmet. I use a Diamond mask and TW pads for deep backstops but I'll use the All Star for short ones (or whenever else I feel like it).

Forest, I'm finding we have some crazy backstops in our area. I worked a school the first week that had one of those low, overhanging backstops and had a foul ball ricochet from there and dropped on the top of my head. First time I've ever had that happen.

I still don't want to wear an HSM.

Glad you're OK!
