One thing which is very hard to explain, is as an experienced umpire not only knowing you don't have to go the X-marks-the-spot position, but knowing and reading the play and being able to be in the best possible position for that particular play. It may sometimes seem unorthodox, but also know it may not be making up mechanics either.

A more typical play like this might be a pressure situation w/ a grounder fielded by F4 diving towards the line.

The first time I saw an advanced umpire go foul b/c of the pressure I was like WTF??? But that situation is almost normal, We all know we'll never see everything that can happen on a field.

A wierd situation I had once was a shallow popup. I was in A. F1 dives. I stard to come in. F1 misses the ball and actually by missing it knocked it towards the 1b coaches box. F2 is now after the ball. I continue move in my "pivot area" F2 fields the ball and actually throws the BR out at first from nearly what would be 2BLX if there were such a thing, I continued to rotate and was nearly by the first base line to make the call. My more senior partner gave me props for reading the situation.
