The thing to be wary of with that mask, @Majordave, is how it was maintained and where it was kept. If it was cyclically cold and then heated, cold and heated, cold and heated, there is an increase in chance (and in some cases, likelihood) of it imploding on impact.

It was a novel mask when it was introduced because it was so lightweight, compared to the Rawlings "hubcaps" and Wilson Cromoly masks that were dipped in enough vinyl to outfit a cheap car dashboard. Back in that day, they had to! Powder-coating was an unemployable technology (either due to scarcity or cost), and paint just wouldn't hold up against even light impacts and scuffing. They had to keep the steel covered, otherwise it would oxidize and rust, and who wants to wear a rusty mask?

Up until then, the only other non-metallic mask was the "Unibar". Daniel at +POS instead designed a mask that had the expected, traditional layout without using metal. He made a heckuva mask – he just didn't count on it being stuck in some guy's cold basement, or left in a freezing car trunk overnight, then subjected to UV exposure and impacts.

Oh I know Max. I had many partners in my early days using that mask even after the reports of injuries and breakages started rolling in.

The book "Everything Happens in Chilicothe" (reviewed on this site by yours truly) has a portion where the focus character in the book Max "the one eyed umpire" has his +POS SUL cracked and it knocks him out during a Frontier League game.

Some guys love that mask. The pads are dyed doeskin. For what that's worth.
