You're going to get hit: in the face, chest, shins, arms, etc. If you umpire and you're behind the plate, you're going to get hit.

 

Positioning has nothing to do with getting-hit-management. It has to do with putting your eyes where they need to be to make you effective calling balls and strikes.

 

So sure, THIS umpire with THIS foul ball could have taken it in the chest instead of the face had he been higher. Had he been even lower, the foul ball would have missed him entirely. None of this speaks to his positioning, which IMHO seems a bit low (that could also be an artifact of the camera angle).

 

BTW, we should all get video of our own plate work to assess our positioning and mechanics. It's amazing what you can learn.

Used the hammer and squat again yesterday and felt comfortable with it so I'll probably be sticking with it.
