Years ago, I was a newbie
PU
with
R1
, a base hit and a close play at 3B. I was still near
HP
when the nut-cutter occurred. My partner didn't cover for my mistake and make the call, instead he turned to me and said, "Well ?"...after I made my call, all hell broke loose. I don't think I've missed a rotation since.

Relax...it'll probably only take getting burned once to drive home this mechanic.

Your partner was a d1ck.

Proper BU mechanic is to take all plays on the bases until PU calls you off 3B (or 1B in a rundown).

I don't subscribe to the "traumatize your partner to learn him good" school of umpire instruction.

Our industry needs more mentors/partners like you Maven. Gentle coaching works best for most, as most are already crapping their pants, even if they're not willing to admit it.

I don't pivot, just take a peek and keep going.

As for messing up other mechanics, we all have brain farts on occasion.  I had one on Saturday as the base ump.  I was in A and a fly ball hit to the RF and instead of going out as it was also a trouble ball, I stood there and realized my mistake as I made the out call.  It was nice diving catch and I was glad it ended being a fairly simple play but I beat myself up over not going out after that.  My excuse, working off the rust from last summer and because I moved cross country I missed any and all preseason training.
