Never ending!!!

Working a pretty high level 18U tournament this weekend. Worked 10 games from Thursday to Sunday.

 

Had the plate on a semi and the championship game. No problems at all. Everyone friendly. Until the Semi game.

 

Team starts losing. Batters can't hit the ball.

 

Pitch at the knees. "Strike"

Coach: That's not a Strike!!! Wake up back there blue!

 

And he continues mumbling for the next inning or so an any thing close against his team.

 

Called another strike on ones of his batters and he goes nuts on me coming to the plate to argue.    

 

I said bye bye. Turned my back and walked away.

 

He continue to yell. chasing me as I walk away. I make it almost to the end of the first base dugout and he is still chasing.

 

Finally TD shows up and escorts him off the field. Told to never come back again.

 

There were a couple of Board members from my association and my assignor there watching the game. After the game they all said my strike zone is spot on and that's why they give me the games they do.

 

Seems like every week there is one of these guys. It's driving me nuts!!!

I do not understand why you are letting this drive you nuts. If the board members and your assignor don't have any issue with your game management techniques (toss those that need tossing), then don't let it bother you. Enjoy the post ejection quiet time.

One of my assigners does that to/for me. I go into the games on Sunday expecting at least one ejection (usually of the coach for a team that is losing) and am then happy when I don't have an ejection. It was that way when I coached and it's been that way since I've been umpiring. The heat of competition and desire to win brings out the worst in a lot of people.

That's just the way it is. I sometimes challenge myself to find a way to keep them in the game with preventative umpiring- shutting down the whining early, issuing warnings, being very firm, vocal and demonstrative with my calls, using crisp mechanics and professional decorum. Doesn't always work and when it doesn't the fickle finger of fate never fails to eject early and often.

Sometimes you just have to umpire.
