Got to skip second and third period to work a HS game-cool!

It was two-man, unfortunately, and my coworker took a great shot to the face in the fifth that dented his mask. He's shaken up and leaves the field. I'm not supposed to work plate (health) but I had no choice and just decided to take it easy.

I forgot to stretch.

Four pitches into my HS plate debut, my lower back cramps up and it goes all the way down to my feet. OUCH. I can't move out of my set position and just very painfully call the ball and as the batter takes his base, catcher looks up at me and says "You okay, blue?" Foolishly, I nod, and pray for another walk. Instead it's a hit that brings in two runners and I try to get out of the way, feeling a very bad feel in my left leg as I do so. I managed to make the call and some of my muscles loosen but it still hurts like a mfer in the seventh inning and I approach the home coach for some ice during an insect delay. Feels a little better but by the end of the game I can barely walk. My supervisor took me to the ER and I just found out that I was severely dehydrated and really messed up a muscle in my leg because of the resulting muscle spasm. Hooray. I'm shocked I can even stand.

There's a lesson to be learned here, I'm sure.

Dehydration can cause cramps which caused your muscle issue. Drink water, even when it's not hot out.

Yes, that's the lesson...

And hydration never begins a the field . . . it begins well in advance.  Far, far easier to keep the body hydrated than to rehydrate the body.

Pre-hydrate and re-hydrate so you don't dehydrate.

Insect delay?

The bees this year are enormous and the mosquitos wouldn't leave the players alone so the game was held up for ten minutes while coaches sprayed bug spray around the field positions.

Meanwhile.........in Alaska.

Sorry you hurt your back/leg.

But the idiosyncrasies of baseball in Alaska the way you present them sound pretty funny. The insect delay, dancing in the dugouts, springtime for Hitler, puking on the plate through your mask........ Put that in your movie.

There's no rules in Alaskan baseball. (Actually those events in particular were spread out over three years or so.)

If you had mosquitos the size we have here, you'd delay the game too. Mosquitos are the state bird.
