I have trained SWMBO to score games for a league on Game Changer using IPad.

Today she did two games that she got paid for today,  totally independent of any assistance during the game from me.

When I got home we discussed any problems or issues she had during the games.

She said on the first game, which was a Little League AAA game, that the Plate Umpire was very quiet in calling a Strike and even had trouble telling if it was a Strike by him making any Physical Motion.  She said she also could not see his hands when he was giving the counts and because of the wind and his low volume could not be sure she was on the same count as him.

I asked her what she did.

She said,  She went down to the back stop after the top of the 1st inning and spoke with him.  She told him,  "Blue you need to be louder and more distinctive with your Strike Calls please".  I can not tell the difference between a Ball and a Called Strike the way your calling them.  She also asked him to get his hands out or up so she could see his fingers when he was giving the count.

During other games she has done she has commented, "Boy these guys sure don't do what you do when your on Home Plate.  They need to get louder and indicate those strike with more emphasis.

She may be a Rookie Score Keeper but apparently she has picked up some umpire knowledge along the way from watching my games.  :notworthy::meditation::rose: :rose:

On April 3rd, I will work a Plate while she is the Score Keeper.

Sure hope her evaluation of my mechanics after the game are up to par.    :hi5:

How much do they pay a Little league scorekeeper?

Yeah, the plate umpire makes a huge difference in scoring the game.  I doubt many umpires even think about us scorers, as we're behind the fence, but we need to hear/see the calls in order to get the book right.

I don't know about other umpires here, but I know I keep the scorers in mind. There've been a few times where I've had to help the scorers with the notation of some plays.

Of course, I scored for my dad's team for several seasons, so I might be a bit more aware of scoring than others without that experience.

The Game Changer APP is fantastic for scoring games.  Once you get the hang of it, it's great!

As far as the HP upmire, I think it's a really good reminder on how much the HP umpire can have an effect on the flow and the nature of the game.  I've seen it from the coaching side and the umpring side.  There's nothing worse than having a HP umpire that is unsure of himself, poor mechanics, soft-spoken, lack of confidence etc.  It really does make the entire game "uncomfortable" and less enjoyable for everyone.  Not to mention it could lead to several other issues such as unconvincing calls, inconsistency, lack of hustle etc.  I always keep this in mind when I have the dish.

GameChanger® will turn ANYONE into a professional scorekeeper!

My current wife knew nothing about baseball AT ALL and was able to effectively use it after one game of instruction AND

she is a UGA grad!

https://www.gamechanger.io/home

How did you teach her how to make all the judgements that are necessary in one game?  i.e. hit vs error, SB, FC, WP, PB, or E for an advance, etc.  The guy who introduced me to GameChanger, and scored his son's team, would constantly score any extra bases with a ball-in-play as stolen bases.  I never could break him of that.  He was also clueless on how to charge errors.  As with most parents, he had no interest in reaching Chapter 10.

GameChanger is coming along nicely but I'm not yet ready to give up a paper book.  Two big issues need to be fixed first, IMO.

1. You have to score the action in chronological order.  There's no way to continue scoring the current batter until you have finished scoring all previous plays.  This becomes an issue on a complex play with a lot of advances, maybe some errors, and outs.  With a paper book you can start tracking the pitches to the next batter while still finishing out that last play.  With Gamechanger you can't.

2. Better access to pitch-count information.  With LL pitch-count rules you have to have access to all pitcher's pitch counts at any time.  GameChanger will only show you the current pitcher's count.  It also lacks any any way to account for mistakes by the official pitch counter (the BU in our league).  With paper I can adjust my "official" pitch count to match the pitch counter's count while still keeping my correct ball/strike count for each pitcher.  With GameChanger I have to keep the "official" pitch count on a separate sheet.

I also keep more stats than GameChanger.

They stopped development on their Android version this year.  Not really a big loss, though, as it was lagging way behind the iOS version on features.

I worked with her AND she watched 3 games on TV and scored them.

Please send your comments to the people at Gamechanger.

They REALLY want your ideas and I need the money.

GameChanger is very easy and great to use. I coach High School softball in the fall and our managers are able to use it much easier than to real book.

Also, Go DAWGS!!!  I am a proud UGA grad.

How do you get paid from it?

I am an investor AND Jeff Kamrath, former Tampa Bay Rays pitcher and GameChanger®Product Evangelist/executive team member is my nephew SOO full disclosure from me now.

No doubt about that!  The stats I produce with my book, though, are more comprehensive but they take a lot of time to produce.  I've attached my stats spreadsheet from Spring 2013 and a Box Score from one of the games.

Ah!  Then go ahead and forward my comments to them.  I don't currently have a CG account.

Also, tell them that it is an uncaught third-strike, not a dropped third-strike.  :)

Game Changer gives you pitch count for all pitchers.

With LL you do still have to keep Pitch Count on a separate log.

The pitch counter is required to sit next to the score keeper.

The Visitors are required to provide a pitch counter.

Check at the end of each inning with pitch counter and you don't have any issues.

I have had said 21 pitches and they say 20.  Simple they missed one so they add one to the log.

As far as your first issue.

If you are falling behind on plays, you need more practice.

I can score fielding errors, throwing errors, passed balls, stolen base with a throwing error that gives the runner another base and get back to the next pitch before the pitcher is ready.

Also not hard to teach someone what a ERROR (Fielding or Throwing), PASSED BALL, WILD PITCH, HBP.

Especially in Little League games.

They happen on almost every play.

I have already had parents who track their kids on it ask me why I didn't give a Stolen Base or why he only got a single and not a double.

They aren't use to proper scoring any way.

My wife also learned in a couple of games and she had no score keeping experience.

My 10 year old daughter is picking it up and playing with the app at home doing practice games.

I make up what happens and she scores it on the app.

She has also been sitting with me and operating the score board during games.

Nobody learns to score in a couple of games.  I have been learning for five years and still have to go back to the book to look up the correct ruling on occasion (and I do care rule 10 in my scoring bag).  How do I go back and fix something I had to look up after the game on GameChanger?

What you get after a couple of games is someone who gets it right 80% of the time.  They aren't going to get things right like which runners advanced on the error and which on a fielder's choice.  They aren't going to get PB/WP right.  They aren't going to know what to do with OBS, INT, or CI.  Who knows what they'd put down for a batter out for illegal action!  The experienced umpires on this forum can't get all the details right resulting in long, argumentative threads and you think a scorer will have rule 10 down in a couple of games?

When I see the books kept by the other teams there is no record of base advances.  Usually no errors.  No tracking of fouls with a 2-strike count.  No indication of when pitching changes occurred.  Little understanding of when an RBI is NOT recorded.  Of course, the coaches don't do anything with the books other than a simple AVG or OBP because they don't have the time.

I suppose you can tell me that my problems with GameChanger's pitch count are not a problem because my league doesn't do it correctly by not providing an official pitch counter. While that might be true but it's enough to keep me from using the app. It shouldn't be difficult to allow a way to display all pitchers current pitch-count at any time.  It also shouldn't be a problem to have a way to go back and edit previous plays while still scoring the game.  It happens in MLB games (a hit changing to an error, etc.).  I need the app to be adaptable enough to handle these variations.

You can go in and make those changes. At least as far as the iPhone version is concerned, go to "Plays" down the bottom, select the play you want to change (eg "Jones singled to 2B ..."), select "Edit Play", and you can make the changes needed: hit to error or error to hit, who the fielders were, etc. I was using it for tonight's exhibition between the Dodgers and Australia (or this morning's game for most of you guys) and liked it. If I'd used a book it might have been smoother and quicker, but more because I've not used the app before. Didn't need to use a manual or look stuff up, just went and used it and was able to work it all out. I'd probably find the iPad version even more useful given the screen real estate and therefore the data that can be shown on one screen all at once.

The app warns you when you go to make those sorts of changes that it can make the stats and stuff all screwy. Probably depends on the particular change you make, like giving an assist or put out to a guy who wasn't even on the field or other weird things like that. My feeling is you'd only use that if it wasn't the previous play but somewhere further back - otherwise undo (if there's been a couple of pitches note what they were first and undo through them), re enter the play correctly (then those pitches you undid) and keep on going.

I was my high school's student manager and used game changer for 2 years. It is an amazing product and saves tons of time by compiling all the stats for you. The first year I was manager we used a paper book and I had to fill out a paper totals sheet at the end of the game and the coach would give it to one of the parents to add to the season totals. Game changer just synced everything automatically when I reconnected the iPad to the internet and one season we even had it doing live updates.

No doubt about that.  I spend a lot of time compiling the stats after each game.
