My association's spring dues are $200. We are required to buy association shirts and hats from our assigner. There are rigorous apparel requirements, and it's all on umpire dime. Oh, and we have $75 summer dues as well.

Wow - that is more expensive than my HS board, college board and hockey board combined!

We have to buy our uniforms, but can use vendor of our choice (except for college board), but once you have them it is just up-keep.

What do you get for $200.00?

Hosed?

Hope you are getting a boatload of games for that. That is a stupid amount did assoc dues unless they are working you every night and bringing in pro clinicians.

What do you get for $200.00? One "clinic", run (poorly) by the assigner. In contrast, my travel association had no dues, but had a mandatory $30 clinic with minor league and college umpires (including the assigner, who also works independent ball). Since the instructors also work tournaments, I've had the opportunity to work with several of them. Just goes to show you what kind of disparity there can be between associations.

@Pony Ump: I'd demand a financial statement. That doesn't sound right.
It's a racket and I know it. My assigner makes each umpire have 4 or 5 different association hats, and makes a $10 profit on each one he sells us. He drives around in a Cadillac escalade. Unfortunately it's this or no games, at least when I'm down in San Diego.

Does this guy have a monopoly on the entire San Diego area? Sounds crazy but stranger things have happened. Baseball mafia.
