Between the games of the O's Dodgers doubleheader Saturday there was a tribute to Earl Weaver. Speakers included Cal RIpken, Brooks Robinson, Jack Dempsey and a few others including his son.

Well Dempsey said something to the effect of, Earl knew the rules of baseball and knew that the umpires didn't know as much as he did.. and he went on to tell a story.

Now I know it is a tribute and you are supposed to say nice things about the honoree. But this was a mind blowing statement. But this explains a lot about where the mentality of these announcers comes from.

Yeah, isn't that something?  In a tribute where nice things are said about the person being honored it is certainly not necessary, or honorable, to make negative comments about others.  But, umpires are a punching bag everyone likes to punch, without a second thought.
